Recently, a friend bought a bird feeder, which added a lot of vitality and fun to his backyard. However, friends told me that the squirrels have also developed a keen interest in these delicious foods, and have been trying to climb up, so that the birds cannot enjoy the food they deserve.While squirrels are cute, garden owners don't want them to spoil bird feeders and scare away the garden's favorite birds. In this regard, my friend has no good solution for a while.
So I started looking for an effective way to get rid of them. Finally, I found some methods, and now I want to share with you. Before telling the practical method, I also want to popularize the knowledge of squirrels.
Here's what you might not know about these mischievous squirrels:
(1) Squirrels can deliberately confuse other animals: When collecting food, squirrels will deliberately bury small amounts of food in many places to confuse other animals, thereby protecting their real food reserves.
(2) Squirrels have very powerful hind limbs: Squirrels have very powerful hind limbs that support them in jumping and climbing. They can jump more than 10 times their body length and are able to walk on tree branches as if on a rope.
(3) Squirrels have a super sense of smell: Squirrels have a very keen sense of smell and can sniff out food hidden in the bark or under the ground.
(4) Squirrels can hardly drink water: Squirrels' bodies can synthesize water by themselves, so they can survive almost without drinking water.
(5) Squirrels have a very good memory: Squirrels have a very good memory and can remember food storage locations and nearby environments. They are also able to remember other squirrels they have known and recognize each other when needed.
(6) Squirrels will fake death to enemies: When squirrels feel threatened, they may fake death, which is a self-defense mechanism. They will relax their bodies, close their eyes, and lie on the ground, making other animals think they are dead.
In short, squirrels are agile animals that often jump up and down. Although they are often mischievous near our houses, there are still many interesting things about their behavior and habits.
If you are experiencing squirrel harassment,
(1) Consider the choice of bird food when using a bird feeder: If you use a bird feeder, choose foods that squirrels don't like, such as sunflower seeds or magpie food. Be careful not to overfeed, as this may attract other woodpeckers or pigeons, which may also attract squirrels.
(2) Use a special squirrel-proof feeder: If you wish to provide food to birds, you can use a special squirrel-proof feeder. These feeders can often be hung from tree branches or secured to tree trunks so that squirrels cannot reach the bird feeder. Of course, with this type of feeder, some birds may have shorter beaks and may not be able to eat food.
(3) Try covering the bird feeder: Another method is to cover the bird feeder with a layer of plastic mesh, which allows the birds to come and go freely, but it is more difficult for squirrels.
(4) Use plants as a barrier: Plant some plants around the bird feeder, such as thorns or prickly pears, which will provide some obstacles for squirrels and make it difficult for them to access the bird feeder.
(5) Use the function of smell: Squirrels are sensitive to some smells, such as mothballs, tea leaves, chili powder, etc. You can sprinkle these things around the bird feeder, which will discourage squirrels.
(6) Try installing a squirrel barrier: A squirrel barrier prevents squirrels from climbing onto branches or fixed objects, thereby preventing them from approaching the bird feeder.
